WHY HELIUM-3 IS THE TELL
Helium-3 is primordial — trapped in the deep mantle since Earth's formation and not replenished. Helium-4 is produced continuously by crustal uranium and thorium decay. A high ³He/⁴He ratio in a spring means the gas bypassed the crust's slow radioactive drip and came straight from below.
WHAT A RIFT ACTUALLY IS
A continental rift is the first stage of an ocean. The lithosphere stretches, thins, and cracks; magma rises into the gaps; over tens of millions of years the floor drops below sea level and water floods in. The Red Sea is a rift caught mid-process; the Atlantic is a rift that finished.
THE EAST AFRICAN SYSTEM
Africa is splitting along a 6,000 km fracture from the Afar triangle in Ethiopia down through Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, and Mozambique. The Somali plate is pulling east from the Nubian plate at roughly 6–7 mm per year — fingernail-growth speed, but relentless.
THE WESTERN BRANCH
The rift runs in two arms. The eastern branch through Kenya and Tanzania is volcanically loud — Kilimanjaro, Ol Doinyo Lengai, the Afar lava lakes. The western branch through the Albertine and Malawi grabens is quieter but seismically active, cradling Africa's deepest lakes. Zambia sits on the southwestern tail of this western arm, where the rift fades — until now.
WHY GEOTHERMAL HERE
Geothermal power needs heat close to the surface. Continental interiors are normally cold because thick old crust insulates the mantle from the surface. A rift inverts this: thinned crust brings the asthenosphere within reach, and faults provide the plumbing for water to circulate through hot rock and return as steam.
THE WILSON CYCLE
Tuzo Wilson's 1960s framework holds that ocean basins open and close on roughly 400-million-year cycles. Today's rifts are tomorrow's oceans; today's subduction zones are yesterday's oceans closing. The Atlantic is opening; the Pacific is closing. Africa, slowly, is following the Atlantic's playbook.
