New YorkarXiv will ban authors a year for hallucinated references or large language model prompts left intact in submissions.
Future submissions from banned authors must then pass peer review — the first hard gate on a major preprint server.
Fabricated citations appeared in 1 in 277 biomedical papers in early 2026, up from 1 in 2,828 in 2023, Columbia researchers found.
